Accountability for Water Inception Meeting

On the 10th and 11th of December 2018, WWI hosted a number of key partner organisations, including the Water Integrity Network, WaterAid, Oxfam, End Water Poverty and the Partnership for African Governance and Social Research in Edinburgh to mark the inception of the Accountability for Water programme.

Accountability for Water is a new action and research programme that aims to strengthen accountability practice in the water sector by identifying mechanisms and factors that drive and sustain improved water sector governance and service delivery.

During the 2-day meeting, the newly formed consortium discussed how to map existing knowledge and research on ‘what works’, initial focus countries and how to engage end users in the research design process to increase uptake. Key questions that the consortium will try to address by designing the research programme include:

a.     What mechanisms are effective for strengthening accountability for water in different political, social and environmental contexts?

b.     What enables people, especially women and the marginalised, to demand accountability for water?

c.      What do ‘duty bearers’ listen and respond to and what leads to durable and equitable benefits?

d.     What knowledge and support do stakeholders need in order to strengthen accountability for water, and how can they be delivered in efficient, sustainable and politically legitimate ways?
