Where We Work

Ethiopia is a beautiful and diverse country made up of more than 70 ethnic groups, speaking over 80 different languages. 58 million people don’t have access to clean water- about half the total population.

Malawi is known as ‘the warm heart of Africa’ for the friendliness of its people. It is home to Lake Malawi- the fifth largest freshwater lake in the world. However, 5.6 million people in Malawi don’t have access to clean water- that’s 1 in 3 people.

Tanzania is home to 62million people, speaking over 100 languages. It’s where you’ll find both Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika. Over 25million people in Tanzania don’t have access to clean water.

Ethiopia

Our team in Ethiopia deliver improved water security for communities by working with industrial parks- helping corporations address water pollution and ensure more sustainable water resource management in their operations. We also work on accountability for water- helping ensure communities know their water rights and are able to demand them from local authorities, companies and other duty bearers.

Our Fair Water Action Fund is managed by the Ethiopia team- providing financial, technical and legal advice to researchers, journalists and civil society organisations working for accountability and water justice.

Malawi

Our team in Malawi deliver improved water security by working with tea farmers and tea associations to address water risks sustainably. We also work on climate justice by supporting communities to identify climate vulnerabilities, like droughts, flooding and health risks, and implement solutions to build resilience.

Tanzania

Our sister organisation, Shahidi wa Maji, in Tanzania is helping communities claim their water rights through advocacy, campaigning and media. They are helping women and young people raise their voices, and working with businesses and government to improve water policy and practice.
