’Towards sustainable and fair water footprints’ will be an opportunity to join consumer and producer country governments, business and civil society representatives to create a global call to action ahead of a partnership launch at COP26 to increase sustainable water use and climate resilience.
Less water, of poorer quality, are two of the real-world impacts of a changing climate. We must adapt our approaches to and use of this finite resource. Yet, water adaptation action is not keeping pace with the speed and scale of climate change. Water adaptation is also critical to Covid-19 recovery. Many rich countries are making this water crisis worse by purchasing high water footprint products such as food, textiles and electric vehicles from water-stressed developing countries. These products may also have been manufactured in ways that contaminate water supplies, thus impacting the poor and nature. Business and investors are at the heart of this trade, and together with government and civil society, they are the key to solving this problem.
Introduced by Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister of State for Pacific and the Environment, UK and chaired by Dutch International Water Envoy Henk Ovink, this session has been designed to initiate the dialogue.
