Water Witness Services – International Sustainable Water Management
With social justice as our core principle, Water Witness works with an international network of partners and advisors to provide independent advice, to carry out investigations and develop innovative solutions to water resource problems.
The water resource problems, needs and issues facing poor people in developing countries guide our work. Based on our field experience, policy analysis and cutting edge research we advise and support communities, governments, businesses and NGOs on all aspects of water security.
Research and development
We carry out high-quality interdisciplinary research and analysis to better understand the world’s water security challenges and how they can be overcome. We prioritise participation in this research by the people affected and with them, we use the knowledge generated to lobby for change, and to develop and test innovative solutions. See:
Advocacy and communications
We generate evidence and use it to advocate and lobby for the interests of the poor and sustainable development within decision making forums, international debates and policy on water. Based on our research and experiences of realities ‘on the ground’, we provide objective commentary and critical analysis. We help the beneficiaries of international aid in poor countries reflect on the performance of aid and to communicate the needs for positive change within donor countries and their own governments. See:
Training and support services
We provide training services to improve understanding and equitable performance in water management. We also provide strategic and operational support to partner organisations in less-developed countries and broker capacity building support between institutions around the world, in particular practitioner-to practitioner support. Guided by whether the work contributes to our charitable objectives we deliver a wide range of services, including technical and policy advice, mediation services to conflicts over water, project management and consultancy. See:
Monitoring and evaluation
Thorough and objective monitoring and evaluation of water policies, programmes and projects is a vital part of achieving an equitable, sustainable and secure water future. Without it there can be no real accountability or learning about how water managers, water users, governments and those supporting them can improve performance. We provide independent monitoring and evaluation on water and climate change initiatives and specialise in participatory monitoring, social audit and budget tracking of aid, NGO and corporate programmes in developing countries. Investigation of water problems and conflicts
Water problems can quickly become polarised and lead to intractable conflicts unless there is collective understanding of their extent, causes, implications and potential solutions. We provide investigative services and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to generate a deep, objective and shared understanding of water issues, impacts and risks. We specialise in triangulating between multiple sources of data and in working in areas where hydrometric data is limited to form a reliable evidence base and common platform for action.
